Github Hell

It's not about whether or not things will happen, it's all about how you respond to them when they do -- I'm probably paraphrasing something badly, but this is what came to mind during today's team project session. None of us were in our element and I the very least among them. NOW we know that Github desktop takes A While to update their servers, NOW we know we can caveman a solution whereby everyone takes turns working off the same computer, one by one, until all the work your team lost to Github nonsense is replaced. NOW I know what it feels like to be the fool who owes the whole team an apology.

We didn't know, and now we know.

[The Infamous Empty Brown Scene of Doom -- my heart when straight into my throat when I opened the game and saw that all our work had seemingly been turned into this]

Naturally they were all good sports and haven't fired me as team leader yet but who knows it might still happen. There's a limit to loyalty, and rightly so.

In other news I spent a few hours in the lab supporting KB with the music and sound implementation on Tuesdsay. This was in line with the theme of the week -- bug fixing and polishing. Programmer WW added a 'task list' UI element to the main scene, much to our delight, as it does make the critical path puzzle in the game a bit more clear. The QA reports playtesters still not really 'getting it' -- but I'm a bit averse to overloading the game with too many contextual hints or comments. Point and click games used to have hint systems back when I first started playing them in the 90s. Maybe a feature for a later date, as we agreed to a feature freeze at week 10 and I'm loathe to overload anyone with more work as coursework deadlines are coming up in a week or so.

Learnings: Github isn't magic. Github desktop takes a long time to update the repository. Github is the solution to collaboration, but it is also only a tool, don't overestimate it's capabilities.

[ Some persistent bugs include this floating bowl of porridge. But to be honest all of us are getting pretty hyped by how good the game is looking and playing as we near the end of the semester!]
