Doggo Detective -- Week 4 -- June 3rd 2024

Updated: Aug 5

Producer JP away this week. I lead the scrum meeting and it went as expected. People seem to know what they are doing, using the Trello and the design documents.

All of us got some support in down-versioning our project in Unity to a 2022 version in order to be able to use the Quibli toon shader asset. [ This is a shader asset that I bought and paid for from the Unity asset store ages ago, and never used for anything but now is the perfect tool for making our cozy game!] We spent some time fiddling with the shader settings and making it look 'right' for our game's 'look'.

All the game jam teams got reminded by our mentor HH to optimise our game throughout the development process. She suggested using the ‘stats’ button in the top right corner of the ‘scene’ view in Unity to keep track of the number of calls on the GPU. I've prodded our programmers about this but I'm not sure this message got through to them very well. They all seem very shy and reluctant to talk to either me or JP or the rest of the team, so it's hard to guage their progress.

I will work on modelling the Dry Goods Shop this week. I believe that having a classic Hong Kong dry goods stall in the scene will give the whole scene an authentic look. I have bought a course on Udemy and will spend the time picking it up again, rather than using Maya because I found Maya difficult.

I feel like getting GitHub working for everyone was a major win for the whole team this week.

Learnings:

It's important to celebrate wins as a team, no matter how small, because small teams that make indie games thrive on morale. Positive energy encourages creative work.
